Some Councils No Longer Send Blue Badge Renewal Reminders
Many Blue Badge holders expect their council to send a reminder before their badge expires. In several areas this is no longer happening. Some councils have stopped issuing renewal letters and now expect badge holders to keep track of the expiry date themselves.
This change has caught many people out. Some only discover their badge has expired when they receive a parking ticket or are told the badge is no longer valid.
Councils that have confirmed they do not send reminders
Several councils state in their Blue Badge guidance that renewal reminders are not sent. Examples include:
- Sefton Council
- Norfolk County Council
- Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council
- North Hertfordshire District Council
- Derbyshire County Council
Other councils may still send reminders, but policies vary widely and there is no legal requirement for them to do so. It is safest to assume that no reminder will be issued.
Why this matters
A Blue Badge is normally issued for three years. Because the period is relatively long, it is easy for people to forget the expiry date. Many badge holders assume a reminder letter will arrive shortly before renewal is due.
If the reminder does not arrive, the badge can expire without the holder realising.
Using an expired badge is treated in the same way as not having one. This can lead to a Penalty Charge Notice and the badge cannot be used again until a new application has been approved.
Renewal is not automatic
Another common misunderstanding is that renewal is simply a formality. In reality, every renewal is treated as a new application and the council reassesses eligibility each time.
Applications can be refused if the form does not clearly explain the person’s mobility difficulties or if the supporting evidence is limited.
This particularly affects people with conditions such as arthritis, heart or lung disease, neurological conditions or chronic pain, where the impact on walking ability needs to be explained properly.
Check your badge now
If you have a Blue Badge, check the expiry date printed on the front.
If it expires within the next few months, it is sensible to begin the renewal process as soon as possible. Councils can take several weeks to make a decision.
