Why Personal Alarms Matter – And How One Could Help Your Family

One of the main things people want as they get older is to remain in their own home. It’s completely understandable. Familiar surroundings can provide comfort, security, and—most importantly—a sense of independence.

That’s where a personal alarm becomes so valuable. It offers peace of mind for everyone: your loved one knows help is close at hand, and you know they won’t be left alone if something goes wrong.

A Lifeline for Independence and Reassurance

The ability to remain independent is hugely important for mental wellbeing. But the worry of whether someone is okay—especially if they live alone—can take a toll on family members.

Convincing someone to use a personal alarm isn’t always easy. If they feel fine, they might not see the need—just as it can be difficult to persuade someone to give up driving or start using a walking stick.

But if your loved one is over 80 and lives alone, it’s worth having the conversation sooner rather than later. One third of people over the age of 65 will experience a fall at least once a year.

A Real Story: David and His Mum

Take the example of one of our clients, who we’ll call David.

David’s mother lived alone, about half an hour from him. She was in good spirits and didn’t see the need for an alarm, although she knew a cousin who used one. David visited weekly and phoned most days.

Then one evening, David called around six. No answer. He assumed she was in the loo and called back ten minutes later. Still no answer. Maybe she’d popped out—unusual, but possible. Another fifteen minutes went by. Nothing.

He knew he had to go.

That half-hour drive was one of the longest of his life. His mind went to the worst places. When he got there and let himself in, he found his mother on the floor in the living room. She’d had a blackout, fallen from her chair, and been unable to get up. She’d been there for hours.

Thankfully, she was okay. But David knew it could have ended very differently.

Needless to say, it wasn’t hard to convince her to get an alarm after that. David chose a model that can be worn around the neck or on the wrist. His mother preferred the wristband—she found it more discreet.

How Do Personal Alarms Work?

There’s a wide range of personal alarms available. Some are GPS-enabled and work outside the home, but for most people, a home alarm is ideal.

Here’s how they work:

  • The user wears a button on a wristband or pendant.
  • If they fall or need help, they press the button—or in some models, the alarm will detect the fall automatically.
  • This triggers a base unit to contact a 24/7 monitoring centre.
  • A trained operator will speak to the person via a loudspeaker on the base unit to assess the situation.
  • They can then call family, neighbours or, if needed, emergency services.

Most base units have a range of around 75 metres, meaning they’ll work throughout the house and even in the garden.

Important note about the digital switchover

If your parent already has a personal alarm, it’s important to check whether it will continue to work after the UK’s ongoing switch from analogue to digital telephone lines. Many older devices rely on the traditional landline network, which is being phased out. You may need to upgrade their alarm or speak to their provider to ensure it remains fully functional.

It’s also worth fitting a key safe outside your loved one’s home. This allows emergency services access if no one else can get there quickly. The monitoring centre can pass on the key code securely when needed.

What Do They Cost?

  • Initial setup cost: usually £30–£50
  • Monthly subscription: typically £20–£30

Of course, this varies depending on the service and features.

Final Thoughts

One in three people over the age of 65 has a fall each year. That statistic alone makes a compelling case for encouraging your parent or relative to consider a personal alarm.

In David’s case, he’s had three calls from the monitoring centre over the past two years. Not the kind of call you ever want—but exactly the kind of call you’d never want to be without.
