Winter can be tough, but it doesn't have to be freezing for your finances! With a range of government schemes available to support households this season, now is the perfect time to check if you’re eligible for a little extra warmth in your wallet.
Here’s a breakdown of what’s on offer and how Grey Matters Consultancy can help you make the most of it.
Cold Weather Payments: Ready for Frosty Days
From 1 November 2024, households on certain benefits could receive £25 during cold snaps. If the temperature hits freezing (zero degrees Celsius) for seven consecutive days, the payment kicks in automatically.
It’s not just a one-time deal either! Every qualifying week from November to March could bring a £25 boost, appearing in your bank account within 14 days. Look for the reference starting with your National Insurance number followed by "DWP CWP." It’s as simple as that—no need to apply!
The Warm Home Discount: £150 on Your Energy Bill
A £150 discount could be coming to your energy bill automatically if you meet the eligibility criteria. Letters confirming this should arrive between October and January. If you don’t get one, double-check your energy account or contact the Warm Home Discount helpline.
The Winter Fuel Payment: Extra Cash for Pensioners
For those born before 22 September 1958, there’s more good news. Eligible pensioners could receive up to £300 this winter to help cover heating costs. Payments should land in bank accounts within the next couple of months, so keep an eye out!
Not sure if you qualify? Claiming Pension Credit could make all the difference. It’s worth up to £3,900 a year and opens doors to additional benefits like council tax reductions and housing cost support. If eligible, your Pension Credit claim can even be backdated.
The Household Support Fund: More Than Just Emergency Help
Your local council has access to the Household Support Fund, which offers extra help with bills and essentials. They may even support local charities and community initiatives, providing everything from school uniforms to energy-efficient appliances.
If you’re struggling with heating costs or other essentials, contact your council to see what’s available.
Eligibility
To qualify for the Winter Fuel Payment and the other payments mentioned in this article for the 2024–2025 winter season, you must have been born on or before 22 September 1958 and, during the qualifying week of 16 to 22 September 2024, have been receiving one of the following benefits:
- Pension Credit
- Universal Credit
- Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
- Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
- Income Support
- Child Tax Credit
- Working Tax Credit
If you were not receiving Pension Credit during the qualifying week but believe you are now eligible, there’s still time to apply. Pension Credit applications can be backdated for up to three months, so you have until 21 December 2024 to submit a claim and qualify for the Winter Fuel Payment. The final deadline for Winter Fuel Payment applications is 31 March 2025, ensuring plenty of time to receive the support you need to stay warm this winter.
