Introducing the Myra App

At Grey Matters Consultancy, we regularly come across families who are unsure where to turn when a loved one is preparing to leave hospital. Discharge can often feel rushed or confusing, and it’s not uncommon for people to feel unprepared for the next steps — especially when ongoing care or support at home is needed.

We wanted to share information about a new app that may be helpful in these situations. It’s called Myra, and it’s designed to provide practical guidance around hospital discharge and recovery.

What is the Myra App?

The Myra app has been developed to support older adults, their families, and unpaid carers during and after a hospital stay. It brings together information, resources, and support services in one place, helping people to make more informed decisions about care and wellbeing.

One of the main benefits is how it helps users plan for hospital discharge — something that can have a real impact on recovery. According to NHS England, up to 20,000 people each day remain in hospital longer than necessary, often due to delays in arranging care. Staying in hospital longer than needed can sometimes do more harm than good, especially for older patients.

Myra guides users through what to ask, what to consider, and how to access the right help — whether returning home, arranging respite care, or exploring other options.

What Information Does It Offer?

The app includes advice and links to both local* and national services, covering areas such as:

  • Care providers and community support
  • Equipment and home adaptations
  • Support for unpaid carers
  • Legal and financial guidance, including information on Power of Attorney
  • Wellbeing and recovery advice

(*Local information is available in some areas and is being expanded.)

It’s intended to save people from having to search multiple sources when they may already be feeling overwhelmed.

Why Grey Matters Is Sharing This

We’re not involved in the development of the app, but we recognise the value of having clear, accessible information — especially at a time when decisions often need to be made quickly. Some members of NHS discharge teams have already commented on how comprehensive it is, and how it could help families take action earlier in the discharge process.

“If the family are proactive, they could have done half the job by the time the patient is medically fit.” – Member of a hospital discharge team

This reflects what we often see in our own work: that having the right information early on can make a real difference.

A Reminder About Support with Care Applications

Whether someone is coming out of hospital or needs to plan for longer-term support, it's important to understand what help might be available — and how to apply for it. Navigating care services, benefits, and legal arrangements can be complex, and mistakes or delays can have lasting consequences.

If you or someone you support is considering a claim for Attendance Allowance, or needs help understanding care options after hospital, Grey Matters Consultancy is here to offer guidance.

Feel free to contact us on 01628 947066 or email info@grey-matters-consultancy.com if you’d like to discuss your situation.

We're always happy to point people in the right direction.
