The UK’s telephone network is undergoing a significant change — and it could affect the reliability of personal alarm systems used by older adults and people with long-term health conditions.
At Grey Matters Consultancy, we want to ensure that individuals and families are aware of what’s happening and understand how it may impact them. If you or someone you care for uses a landline-connected personal alarm, it’s important to be informed.
What Is the Digital Switchover?
The UK’s current analogue phone network is being phased out and replaced by a fully digital service. This transition is already underway in some regions and is expected to be completed across the country by 2025.
Most standard calls will continue as normal, but personal alarms that rely on analogue landlines may no longer work reliably unless they are compatible with the new digital network. Many older alarm models were not designed with this change in mind.
Why This Matters
Personal alarms are an essential lifeline for many — providing immediate access to help in the event of a fall, medical emergency, or other urgent situation. However, they can only fulfil this role if they remain connected and functional.
As providers transition users to digital phone lines, older analogue alarms may stop connecting properly to monitoring centres. In a crisis, this could mean a delay in getting assistance.
What You Can Do
If you're unsure whether your current alarm will continue to function after your telephone provider switches you to a digital line, it’s best to check directly with the alarm provider. They can confirm compatibility and, if needed, advise on appropriate alternatives.
At Grey Matters Consultancy, we refer clients to Careline365 — a trusted provider offering alarm systems that are designed to work with both current and future telephone networks. Their systems also offer optional extras, such as fall detectors and smoke alarms, for added peace of mind.
As a referral partner, we’re pleased to share that Careline365 is offering £15 off to anyone referred by Grey Matters Consultancy. To use this discount, quote the code GMC15 when ordering by phone on 01603 964306.

The digital switchover is a national change that could have unintended consequences for vulnerable people if steps aren’t taken to prepare. Ensuring that any personal alarm system remains reliable and effective is essential.
